Before anyone jumps in with, “But what about Ballyowen?” Let’s set the record straight. I’m not talking about resort courses. Just like I wouldn’t include Pinehurst No. 2 in a list of everyday public tracks in North Carolina.
Let me say this: Francis Byrne goes toe-to-toe with the best public courses in the state, and I’ll die on that hill. I’ve had the privilege of playing some of New Jersey’s most prestigious clubs, including Baltusrol, host of the 2005 and 2016 U.S. Opens. While Francis doesn’t have the same history, views, or clubhouse grandeur, what it does offer is some of the purest tee-to-green golf in the state.
When the course is fully grown in, the greens are fast, sloped, and full of character. The fairways are in pristine shape, free of crabgrass or patchy dirt. The rough is thick and lush, offering a fair but tough test for anyone who misses the short stuff. And if you’re looking for a challenge, tip it out; This course stretches to just under 7,000 yards. It’s got enough bite to test even scratch to plus players.
These are the things I value in a course: consistent conditions, a demanding yet fair layout, and a price tag that doesn’t make your wallet cry. Compared to nearby Rock Spring, which is also a great muni but runs $187 on a Saturday, Francis Byrne’s $80 fee is an absolute steal.
Pros
- Long and challenging layout that rewards smart play
- Large, undulating greens that test your putting touch
- Thick, healthy rough, feels like you’re playing in a local tourney
Cons
- No driving range (just some good ol’ fashioned batting cage warmups)
- Tee times are tough to snag without an Essex County card
- Clubhouse is serviceable, but nothing to write home about
- No turn shack, pack snacks and a discreet beverage or two
Francis Byrne Golf Club Review: 9.3/10
- Best quality: Pure golf experience from tee to green—nothing gimmicky, just great golf.
- Worst quality: No driving range, just nets.
- Other considerations: Tee times on weekends are very tough. Plan ahead or be ready to snag a canceled tee time the day before.
Whether you’re chasing your best round or just looking for a solid test of golf without breaking the bank, Francis Byrne delivers in spades. Bring your friends, your A-game, your patience, and you’re in for a great day.
